Food and wine to taste the authentic Sicily

Pick-up. We will pick you up outside/nearby your accommodation in Taormina or in its close vicinity (depending on the accommodation’s location, we will organize a convenient meeting point) at about 9.00 AM. Each of our vehicles can accommodate up to 8 participants.

Visit of the medieval village of Castiglione. It takes about one hour to get to Castiglione di Sicilia, framed in the beautiful valley of the Alcantara: this village, strategically located on a hill northwards of Etna, ranked among Italy’s most beautiful borghi. During the free visit of the city you will see the Castelluccio, an ancient Byzantine castle, the “ U Cannizzu” tower, the cobblestone alleys and the several old churches, which are typical of these medieval villages. Not to be missed is the view from the Belvedere, where you will be delighted at the magnificent panorama of the Alcantara and its basaltic rocks.

First winery.  At about 11.00/11.30 AM you will get to the first winery of the day, where you will taste some locally-produced Etnean wines paired an aperitif based on local products. Then, you will have the chance to walk along the vineyards and see first-hand the winegrapes that originate the wines, and you will learn about their production.

Second winery. At lunchtime (about 1/.1.30 PM), you will stop for about 2 hours by the second winery where you will taste more DOP Etnean wines (white, red and rosé), paired with a complete lunch based on traditional products. In there, you will have the possibility of walking in the winery, looking at the barrels where the wine you have just tasted is stored and learn more about its production.

Drop-off. At the end of the trip, at around 5.00/5.30 PM, the guide will drop you off at the starting point.

Castiglione di Sicilia and the Wine Route of Etna

Awarded as one of the most beautiful medieval villages in Italy, Castiglione di Sicilia is set between the wonderful Alcantara Valley and the Parco dell’Etna. The history of the village actually traces the history of Sicily: founded by Greek refugees of Naxos in 496 BC, the village was destroyed by the troops of Dionysius I, tyrant of Syracuse, and dominated by several other people; in fact, the town shows to this day the signs of its historical past, from the ruins of a Greek acropolis, to a small Byzantine rustic temple, to the Saracen tower and the Norman castle. Castiglione is also famous for its being “the Town of Wine” – the Etna Doc is actually produced here –  which makes it a must-see of the Wine Route of Etna.

The Wine Route of Etna is a virtual trail that involves local wine producers and wineries of the Etna region; it promotes the excellence of the area in terms of natural beauty and unique agricultural productions, which only the volcanic soil can generate. Its departure point is in Riposto, Port of Etna, and touches many other cities and villages set between the hills and the valleys od the area, among which  Zafferana Etnea, Milo, Sant’Alfio, Piedimonte Etneo, Linguaglossa, and Castiglione di Sicilia. The countryside, the ancient mansion and the rich vineyards set the background of this journey in the history of both Sicily and the art of winemaking.
